About the Exhibition
Internationally acclaimed quilt artist Phyllis Stephens brings her celebrated narrative works to Houston for her first solo exhibition in the city.
A fifth-generation quilt artist, Stephens is known for transforming fabric, pattern, color and storytelling into richly layered works of contemporary art. Her subjects explore family, aspiration, culture, beauty, memory and the African American experience.
The Piece Maker Is Here offers Houston collectors and art enthusiasts a rare opportunity to experience a significant body of Stephens’ work in person.
Recognition
Stephens’ work has been exhibited internationally and is held in prominent institutional and private collections. Her 2023 solo exhibition, The Movement of Material, was presented at Almine Rech New York.

About the Artist
Phyllis Stephens is an internationally recognized quilt artist whose work combines the traditions of narrative quilting with contemporary figurative art. Through vivid textiles, intricate patterns and carefully constructed scenes, she creates works that celebrate identity, relationships, ambition, heritage and everyday life.
Her practice carries forward a multigenerational family tradition while expanding the possibilities of story quilting within contemporary art.
